Your first visit at Schanuth Family Chiropractic in Council Bluffs

Your first visit

What to expect

  1. Step 1

    Warm welcome

We greet you, get a little history, and make sure you feel comfortable from the moment you walk in.

  2. Step 2

    Consultation, exam & X-rays

We listen to your story and perform a thorough exam. Most patients also get X-rays, so Dr. Nate can see the position and condition of your spine and rule out anything that would make an adjustment unsafe.

  3. Step 3

    Clear plan

We explain what we found in plain language and recommend a plan to get you out of pain and keep you feeling your best long-term.

  4. Step 4

    First adjustment

When clinically appropriate, you may receive your first gentle adjustment the same day.

“I always get the best treatment and my appointments are quick. I had some extra discomfort in my back and Dr Nate made sure my adjustments were directed along those lines instead of my usual adjustments. He also offered a few ideas for stretching to work on my discomfort as well. Best costumer service ever! Thank you for helping keeping me adjusted.”

New patient FAQs

What should I bring to my first visit?+

Bring your ID and insurance card (if you're using insurance), and wear comfortable clothing you can move in. Arrive a few minutes early to complete your intake paperwork — or fill it out ahead of time if we send it over.

How long is the first appointment?+

Plan for about 20–30 minutes for your consultation, exam, and X-rays (for most patients). When appropriate, we'll also begin your first treatment the same day.

Why do I need X-rays?+

X-rays let Dr. Nate see the position and condition of your spine, so he can create a care plan tailored to you and rule out anything that would make an adjustment unsafe. Most patients have X-rays taken on their first visit.

How long are regular visits?+

A typical adjustment appointment takes only about 5 minutes. Dr. Nate only adjusts patients, so visits are quick and specific.

Does a chiropractic adjustment hurt?+

For most people, no. Adjustments are gentle and many patients feel relief right away. You may hear a soft "pop" as pressure releases from a joint — that's normal and not painful. We tailor every technique to your comfort and explain what we're doing first.

Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?+

No — you can book with us directly, without a referral from your physician. If your specific insurance plan requires one, we'll help you sort it out.

Is chiropractic care safe?+

Yes. Chiropractic is a widely recognized, conservative, drug-free approach for many musculoskeletal conditions. After your exam we'll flag anything outside our scope and refer you to the right provider when that's the better path.

Do you take insurance?+

We accept many major plans, including Aetna, AARP, Ambetter, BCBS, Wellpoint, Iowa Total Care, Molina, Medicare, Iowa Medicaid, Railroad Medicare, UMR, UHC, Humana, and Cigna — and also offer affordable self-pay options. Send us your insurance details and we'll verify your benefits before your visit — no surprises. Please note: we do not handle auto-accident or workers' compensation cases.

Can I use my HSA or FSA?+

Yes — chiropractic care is typically an eligible HSA/FSA expense. We accept HSA/FSA cards along with all major credit cards and cash.

How many visits will I need?+

It depends on your condition, how long it's been going on, and your goals. After your exam and X-rays, we recommend a plan to get you out of pain and explain the reasoning. There's no set end date — once your pain is resolved, we transition you into long-term wellness care.

Can children and pregnant patients be seen?+

Yes. We offer gentle care for kids and expecting moms, with techniques always adapted to be safe and comfortable for every stage.
